What is Edema? How to manage Edema?

Edema is a type of swelling due to the accumulation of fluids in the tissues of the body beneath the skin. There are many factors responsible for causing edema. Based on the types of factors, edema can be classified into many types.  For example, pulmonary edema is responsible for affecting the lungs, while pedal edema is known for causing swelling in the feet. This disorder is slow in the start but gradually it speeds up and can deteriorate the conditions very easily. In this section, we will learn about edema and possible methods to manage it.

Symptoms

Besides the swelling of the limbs or the body organs, there are other symptoms that can increase the severity of the affected person. This is generally a water/fluid retention in a particular part of the body which causes swelling in the affected part. Generally, this is occurred beneath the skin especially on the hands, ankles, legs, arms, legs, etc.  However, the bowel, lungs, eyes, brains, muscles can also be affected. Edema usually occurs in pregnant women and older adults, but it can happen to anyone. Other symptoms than swelling in limbs or body parts, stiff joints, weight gain/loss, stretched skin, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, confusion, higher pulse rate, high blood pressure, visual abnormalities, etc.

Treatment for this disorder

There is no common umbrella treatment for this disorder. The treatment depends upon the type of Edema. However, diuretics are the most common type of medication. Diuretics help in getting rid of the excess fluid by increasing the rate of urine productions. The medical professionals and doctors will use and recommend specific methods for treating edema of all types. Besides medications stockings (compression) also help in reducing the swelling and discomfort.

But this disorder is treatable if an affected person follows a few of the preventive measures that are able to reduce the severity of the edema. These are weight loss, doing regular exercises, cutting salt consumptions, rising of the limbs to improve circulation, wearing supportive stockings, avoiding long sitting or standing, avoid extreme temperature changes, etc.  Physical therapy may also help you to recover from the fluid deposition by stroking in the direction of the heart. There are therapies that include oxygen to improve the conditions of the affected person.

Causes of the Edema

There are many factors that cause edema. This can be from any kind of infection, kidney disease, electrolyte problems, malnutrition, tissue death, circulatory problems, and total body fluid overload.  The other possible causes of this disorder are heart failure, kidney failure, liver disease, pregnancy, dietary factors, diabetes, head injury, stroke, brain tumor, allergies, prolonged immobility, high-altitude, burns, sunburns, infection, inflammation, menstruation, contraceptive, menopause, and thyroid disease.
